Rain Returns With 'Back to the Basic'

Rain is back. He's ``Back to the Basic.''

``Hello, everyone. Rain is back with a ballad,'' the 27-year-old told a roomful of reporters and photographers in Yeouido, Seoul, Monday.

He has returned as a singer, after spending months traveling around the world promoting his Hollywood action flick, ``Ninja Assassin,'' and it was evident he was ready to further wow fans with yet another hot track.

``I needed to go back to where I started from. People have asked me why I wanted to release an album in Korea when I could continue acting in the United States. The reason is I could not forget my roots: my Korean fans. It was my duty and so that's why I chose the title `Back to the Basic,''' he said.

The Album

Although Rain has released several ballads, this is the first time he is promoting his new album with one, which is called, ``Love Song.''

``I've been working as Rain for about eight years now, and I felt I needed to give my fans something completely different. A singer has to evolve with transition; that's what we should strive to do and that's why people love us,'' he said.

``But I promise it's just not me standing on the stage just singing; there will be some dance moves along the way,'' Rain added.

``Back to the Basic'' is comprised of five tracks, including the English version of ``Love Song.'' The four tracks are definitely groovier than his other up-beat and electronic numbers, which were always accompanied by clever choreography that brought out the power and sexiness of the singer. ``Love Song'' was made two years ago by Rain himself, alongside his last hit number ``Rainism.'' It was released earlier this month and immediately topped online music charts.

``I wanted to make tasteful music, not so fancy and decorated. The songs are all based on my experience,'' he said, smiling shyly.

Working for the movie was a difficult time for Rain as he had to stick to a strict diet and workout routine, and he had to go through that again for his album photos.

The singer shows off his chiseled torso in the photos, some with a longer and wavier hairdo, and others with it a shorter style. While previous albums focused on the more masculine and tougher Rain, this one showed a more feminine side.

``I'll be wearing some accessories like bracelets, vests, hats and fake eyelashes. I was serious when I said I wanted a change!'' he said, laughing.

Growing as a Man

Music making and becoming a star cannot be done without the help of others. In this case, Rain was lucky as he had teamed up with one of Korea's best known producers and singers Park Jin-young, or JYP, from the start. When he left JYP and announced that he was starting his own company, some waited patiently, others worried. But in the end, Rain proved that he was serious and brushed off doubts by branching out as a singer, actor, fashion designer and producer.

``When I worked with Park, he was in charge of the music and I was in charge of the stage settings, deciding on scripts for dramas and films and it worked. When I branched out on my own, I had to think about where I was going with `Rain.' As I worked on `Rainism,' I realized that I had talents that I didn't even know I had,'' he recalled.

``Now, I definitely listen to more music and always wonder about myself and prepare for the next step. I think now I finally know what I'm doing.''

But like any other young entertainer who goes through a bit of a slump, Rain also went through a hard time as one of the most popular singers and actors in Asia.

``Living as a celebrity in Korea means you have to hide some parts of your life and must restrain yourself to some extent. At one point, I wanted to give up everything and let go. But now I have learned a lot and I think I'm on my way to becoming a better man,'' he said.

Big Dreams

Rain may have become a household name in Korea and a couple of Asian countries, but he still has a long way to go to be seriously recognized as an actor or singer in the U.S. and European market. Thanks to ``Ninja Assassin,'' he has demonstrated that he has onscreen potential, but what about his music?

``The promotion tour for (the film) made me realize that the world is big and there are so many things to do. I've done interviews and commercials after filming `Ninja Assassin,' and I think it was a great stepping stone in my career,'' said Rain.

The singer apparently had a firm strategy: start out as an actor, be recognized and then release an album.

``Just like with the drama `Full House' in Asia,'' he said.

It seems that Rain may have a head start over his fellow Korean singers, who have strived to tap into the U.S. market for the past few years, but America is a tough sell, and the singer knew that rushing would not be effective.

``You can't just release an album and make a big fuss over it. I would love to start immediately, considering my age, but I must follow the American way,'' he said calmly.

`` There will be failures but there will also be success. I'm dreaming big.''

Asian pop sensation Rain says the inspiration for his latest single "Love Song" came from his own experiences.

The artist made the remark during a press conference for his new album "BACK TO THE BASICS" held Monday at the KT Building in Youido.

He is set to return to the Korean music scene with his special album due out April 7 featuring the title track "Love Song," the first in two years since releasing his last studio album "Rainism" in 2008.

Below are excerpts from his press conference.

10: Your first song off the new album is a ballad instead of a dance song and you have taken on an androgynous image which is different from your previous images. What was the reason behind this attempt?
Rain: I want to show a definite change because it has been eight years since I made my debut. I had recorded "Love Song" when "Rainism" was unveiled. With "Song" I took out the embellishments and released something light. I was looking to perform an authentic ballad. After promoting “Song,” I am thinking of promoting "Hip Song," a dance track from the album. My androgynous image is a ground breaking attempt. I wanted to stimulate the listeners through my eyebrows, vest, leather pants and hat which are impossible to match with the bling bling music. Releasing the music will be the first round and I want to show new things through my performances on stage. I want to put on a performance that will satisfy the audience's ears and eyes.


10: The title of your album is "BACK TO THE BASIC." Is there any particular reason for this?
Rain: I was planning on releasing an album at the end of this year. And I would have to release records simultaneously in Korea, the United States, Asia and Europe but my drama and film got pushed back by two months. I already had the songs and the choreography ready so I decided I want to go back to my original resolution and have them hear unembellished and light music. Some people have been asking why promote in Korea but Asia is at the center of the world now and Korea is at the center of Asia. And of course taking care of my Korean fans is my priority.


10: How are plans for your U.S. album release going?
Rain: First off I want to say that my career as an actor in the United States is going smoothly. (laugh) In Asia, I gained recognition by appearing in a drama first and then popularity through singing. And I didn't intend on it but I think I'm stepping the same path in the U.S. right now too. I think my acting career is going well and after 'Rain' becomes a household name and the U.S. audiences soon break away from the stereotype that I'm an action star, I want to release an album. I have plans on filming a movie first and after I have established myself as an actor I hope that the record will follow suit.


10: What kind of personal impact did promoting Hollywood picture "Ninja Assassin" have on you?
Rain: It made me understand the meaning of being able to do anything in this big world. In Asia, people knew who I was through my drama "Full House" but in the U.S. and Europe, I had to make my name known through "Ninja Assassin." That movie helped me become known as an action star and it gave me a chance to shoot a commercial. It was a tough eight months but I gained a lot at the same time. It was a very happy promotion.


10: There was an article saying that you will be starring in a drama. How are those plans coming along?
Rain: I am currently in talks in starring in a drama. It is a drama that I have been looking forward to doing but nothing concrete has been set yet so we are discussing many things right now. I think the drama will probably come out in September or October.


10: There are other artists who are returning to stage so there seems to be fierce competition.
Rain: Right now I don't feel I'm returning to the stage to gain something. Rather, I'm out to have fun. It is more important to show the different dimensions of myself. It is the prelude to entering a bigger market. Last week when we were pre-recording a show I didn't know anyone on stage. (laugh) I know that Lee Hyori will be making a comeback and since I know her it will be fun and not as boring.


10: Right now the big thing is idol groups, do you feel any burden?
Rain: I think I am in the middle generation in the music industry. There are my senior singers such as Park Jin-young and Yang Hyun-suk and I have many junior singers after me which focus on different markets. For me, I feel like I have to succeed in the China, all of Asia and the U.S. market. The idol groups are all talented but I feel that I am responsible in opening a door so they can begin their worldly activities. I will work hard to be a better model so that we can enjoy the stardom together.

เรน (Rain) ได้ครูฝึกที่เก่งกาจอย่าง Grace Park

ในระยะเวลา 3 เดือนที่เรนได้ฝึกร่างกายของเขาเพื่อเตรียมตัวสำหรับตอนนี้ ด้วยการดูแลเรื่องอาหาร

Rain recording for back up. Praised for singing well.

After the press conference, Rain went straight to the TV tower for the exclusive interview with Arts & Humanity Channel program <Taste> (aired at 9 April 19.00), as well as recording the song for the performance (as a back up). His Korean staff has a simple meal before the interview – sandwich from the hotel lounge bar. Rain only drank some orange juice. They were not satisfied with the Korean translator (an university student) at the press conference, so Rain’s team arranged the CEO of a China-Korea Cultural Media company to help at the interview. The CEO, Mr. Park, told our reporter that the reply that impressed him most is “Although I am being called World Star, I feel it is still a long way for me to “conquer the world””. The subsequent recording of “We are the World” was completed within 30 minutes. According to the studio, Rain sang really well. He’s the quickest to finish.

The rehearsal went smoothly than expected. When it was over Rain requested that he wanted to have dinner at his favourite Yuliu restaurant at Jianguo Hotel. To save time, his manager contacted the hotel while traveling in the car and ordered all the dishes in advance. A translator told our reporter that Rain felt bad not having been to anywhere since he arrived Shanghai, and wanted to go out to relax. Our reporter learned from the staff at Yuliu that this is an authentic Korean cuisine restaurant. Rain would have a big meal here every time he was in Shanghai. This was the third time he came. “He loves deep fried prawns, cold seafood and abalone. Too keep fit, he drinks only barley tea while others have carbonated drinks.”

หลังจากงานแถลงข่าว เรนตรงไปยังหอคอย TV เพื่อสัมภาษณ์สุดพิเศษกับรายการ Arts & Humanity Channel <Taste> (ออกอากาศวันที่ 9 เมษายน เวลา 19.00 น.) พร้อมกันนี้ก็ยังได้บันทึกเสียงที่ใช้ในงานแสดง (เป็นเสียงแบ็คอัพ) สต๊าฟชาวเกาหลีของเรนได้ทานอาหารง่าย ๆ ก่อนการสัมภาษณ์ ซึ่งเป็นแซนด์วิชจากเลานจ์บาร์ของโรงแรม แต่เรนดื่มเพียงน้ำส้มคั้นนิดหน่อยเท่านั้น ทีมงานของเรนไม่พอใจเท่าไรนักกับล่ามเกาหลี (นักศึกษาม.) ในงานแถลงข่าว ดังนั้นพวกเขาจึงจัดเตรียมเอา CEO ของบริษัท China-Korea Cultural Media มาช่วยในการสัมภาษณ์แทน CEO Park บอกผู้สื่อข่าวของเราว่า คำตอบที่ประทับใจเขามากที่สุดคือ “แม้ว่าผมจะได้รับการขนานนามว่าเป็น World Star แต่ผมก็ยังรู้สึกว่า ยังมีหนทางอีกยาวไกลในการก้าวขึ้นไป “พิชิตโลก” สำหรับผมอยู่ดีครับ” การบันทึกเทปเพลง “We are the World” ในเวลาต่อมาเสร็จสิ้นภายใน 30 นาที ทางสตูดิโอบอกว่าเรนร้องเพลงได้เพราะมาก ๆ และเป็นคนที่บันทึกเสียงได้เร็วที่สุด

เรนกลับโรงแรมที่พัก ปราศจากดินเนอร์ซีฟู้ด

มีข่าวว่าเรนจะเข้าพักในห้องชุดสุดหรูที่โรงแรม Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan แต่ผู้สื่อข่าวของเราได้รู้ภายหลังว่า ที่สุดแล้วเรนและทีมงานยกโหลของเขาได้เข้าพักที่โรงแรม Pullman แทน โดยการเปลี่ยนแปลงในนาทีสุดท้ายนี้ก็เนื่องมาจากเหตุผลด้านการรักษาความปลอดภัยนั่นเอง ซึ่งก็เป็นไปตามคาดที่มีแฟน ๆ มากมายมานั่งรออยู่ที่โรงแรม Renaissance Shanghai Yuyuan ในวันที่ 30 มีนาคมแต่ก็ต้องพลาดโอกาสที่จะได้พบเรนไป เรนพักอยู่ที่ชั้น 46 เป็นห้อง executive suite ไม่ใช่ presidential suite พนักงานรักษาความปลอดภัย 2 คนของเขาพักอยู่ในห้องเตียงเดียวถัดจากห้องของเรน พวกเขายอมที่จะเสริมเตียงมากกว่าที่จะอยู่ห่างจากเรน ความปรารถนาของเรนที่จะได้ทานซีฟู้ดปลาหมึกต้องมีอันฝันสลายเนื่องด้วยข้อจำกัดด้านเวลา เขาจึงได้ทานแค่บุฟเฟ่ต์ในโรงแรมด้วยราคา 198 เหรียญ*

เรนในการซ้อมคอนเสิร์ต ไม่สนใจแถว

เรนทานอาหารเที่ยงจากรูมเซอร์วิส และออกจากโรงแรมเวลา 15.15 น. ไปยัง The Bund เพื่อซ้อมคอนเสิร์ต เพลง “We are the World” จะแสดงโดย 6 นักร้องจาก 5 ประเทศ เจ้าหน้าที่แจ้งผู้สื่อข่าวของเราว่าเรนดูเหมือนจะไม่ได้สนใจแถวและตำแหน่งที่ควรยืนของเขาเท่าไหร่ อีกทั้งนี่ยังถือเป็นครั้งแรกที่เรนจะได้ร่วมร้องเพลงเป็นคอรัสกับศิลปินคนอื่น แม้แต่ในพิธีปิดกีฬาโอลิมปิคที่ปักกิ่ง เรนก็ยังได้แสดงเดี่ยว (huhuhuhu note : ตรงนี้ข้อมูลผิด) (tem’s note : เข้าใจว่าคนเขียนบทความหมายถึง ร้องเป็นเสียงหลัก ไม่ได้ร้องเป็นคอรัสให้คนอื่น...งี้รึป่าว?) ดังนั้นนี่ถือเป็นเรื่องพิเศษจริง ๆ สำหรับเซี่ยงไฮ้เอ็กซ์โป เรื่องที่น่าสนใจก็คือ เมื่อการซ้อมผ่านไปได้ครึ่งทาง ฝนก็เริ่มตกลงมา Coco และ Vitas โด่งดังในฐานะ “ราชาและราชินีแห่งสายฝน” คงไม่มากเกินไปนักหากจะกล่าวว่า เรนได้ถูกเพิ่มลงไปในลิสต์นี้เรียบร้อยแล้ว

เรนไปภัตตาคารอาหารจีน อารมณ์ดีที่ได้ไปเดินเล่น

การซ้อมเป็นไปอย่างราบรื่นกว่าที่คาดไว้ เมื่อการซ้อมจบลง เรนได้ร้องขอว่าเขาอยากจะไปทานอาหารค่ำที่ Yuliu ภัตตาคารโปรดของเขาที่โรงแรม Jianguo เพื่อเป็นการประหยัดเวลา ผู้จัดการของเรนได้ติดต่อไปยังโรงแรมขณะที่กำลังนั่งรถไปและสั่งอาหารไว้ล่วงหน้า ล่ามบอกกับผู้สื่อข่าวของเราว่าเรนอารมร์ไม่ค่อยดีที่ไม่ได้ออกไปไหนเลยตั้งแต่มาถึงที่เซี่ยงไฮ้ และอยากจะออกไปผ่อนคลายบ้าง ผู้สื่อข่าวทราบจากเจ้าหน้าที่โรงแรม Yuliu ในภายหลังว่าที่นี่เป็นภัตตาคารอาหารเกาหลีขนานแท้ เรนจะมารับประทานอาหารมื้อใหญ่ที่นี่ทุกครั้งที่ไปเซี่ยงไฮ้ และนี่ก็เป็นครั้งที่ 3 แล้วที่เขาได้มาที่นี่ “เรนชอบกุ้งทอด, ซีฟู้ดเย็น และหอย abalone (หอยทากขนาดใหญ่จำพวก Haliotis เป็นแหล่งของมุก เนื้อของมันใช้เป็นอาหาร) และเพื่อรักษาสุขภาพ เรนจะดื่มแต่ชาบาร์เล่ย์ ขณะที่คนอื่น ๆ จะดื่มเครื่องดื่มผสมโซดา”

21.15 น. เรนมาถึงที่แสดงคอนเสิร์ตและคอยอยู่ในเต็นท์พักชั่วคราว เรนเป็นคนที่มีความอดทนอย่างยิ่งขณะที่ต้องรอเป็นเวลานานนับชั่วโมง เขาไม่ได้บ่นอะไรมากเรื่องอากาศร้อนและพรม เขาเพียงแค่ขอผ้าขนหนูจากทีมงาน เพราะเหงื่อออกเยอะมากหลังการเต้น สายฝนกระหน่ำลงมาอย่างหนักมากขึ้น ๆ ขณะที่เรนทำการแสดงทั้ง 2 เพลง “Crazy” (huhuhuhu note : ควรจะเป็น “Rainism”) และ “it’s Raining” เรนลื่นล้ม แต่ก็พยุงตัวขึ้นด้วยมือเดียวอย่างว่องไวและยืนขึ้นทันที หากผู้ชมไม่สังเกตดี ๆ คงจะคิดไปว่าเป็นท่าเต้นเฉพาะตัวท่าหนึ่ง ผู้จัดการของเรนให้ความเห็นไว้ว่า : MV เพลง “It’s Raining” ถ่ายทำในสายฝน เรนจึงมีประสบการณ์กับสภาพการณ์เช่นนี้อย่างช่ำชอง การแสดงของเขาจึงไม่ได้รับผลกระทบอะไรจากสายฝน


31 มีนาคม 11:30 น.
เรนบินกลับบ้าน เฝ้ารอเวลาที่จะได้พบกันอีกครั้งในเดือนมิถุนายน

ในช่วง 2 วันที่เรนอยู่ในเซี่ยงไฮ้ เรนได้ใช้รถยนต์ Audi A6 สีดำ ในการเดินทาง ต่างจากรถยนต์ยี่ห้อหรูอย่างที่เราคาดการณ์ไว้ เรนยิ้มและบอกว่าจะกลับมาอีกครั้งในเดือนมิถุนายน เขาจะมีคอนเสิร์ตในเซี่ยงไฮ้ระหว่างงานเอ็กซ์โป และเขาเฝ้ารอที่จะได้ “ร้องเพลงท่ามกลางสายฝน” อีกครั้ง

เรน เผย "ตอนที่ผมได้รับข้อเสนอให้แสดงในเรื่อง Ninja Assassin ผมบอกกับตัวเองว่า
'ในที่สุดก็ถึงตาของเรา เราจะได้เป็นแบรดพิตต์แล้วสินะ' ผมรู้สึกดีมากครับ"
เสริม "การพบกันครั้งแรกระหว่างผู้กำกับที่ดีและผู้จัดจำหน่ายทำให้ผมคิดว่า 'เขาบินมาเพื่อเราเลยนะเนี่ย'
แล้วผมยังได้รับข้อเสนอเป็นบ้านแบบอลังการสุดๆ เพื่อให้พักอาศัยตอนถ่ายทำที่สหรัฐอเมริกาด้วยครับ" เขาอธิบาย

แต่ว่าเรนได้ตัดสินใจกลับไปที่ 'ความตั้งใจเดิม' ของเขาด้วยการปฏิเสธข้อเสนอบ้านพัก
และออกไปอาศัยอยู่ในหอพักพื้นที่ขนาด 16.5 ตารางเมตร ซึ่งเป็นหนทางในการต่อสู้กับตัวเอง
เรน กล่าว "ตอนนั้นผมเอาหนังสือความสำเร็จจากความพอเพียงมาอ่าน ก็เลยบอกกับตัวเองว่านี่แหละความพอเพียงครับ"
เขากล่าวพร้อมหัวเราะ "ตอนที่ผมเริ่มฝึกซ้อมสำหรับการถ่ายภาพยนตร์ ผมติดภาพของบรู๊ซลีไว้ที่หน้าตู้เย็นครับ
ในระหว่างที่ผมกินเพียงแค่ มะนาว กะหล่ำปลี แอปเปิ้ล และอกไก่ อย่างละคำตอนขับรถไปกองถ่าย
พอผมไปถึงที่นั่นผมจะฝึกเหมือนเป็นหุ่นยนต์เลยครับทั้งวิดพื้น ใช้ดาบ ใช้สลิง อะไรพวกนี้ครับ"
เสริม "แต่เวลาผมกลับมาที่บ้านผมก็ต้องต่อสู้กับตัวเองอีกรอบครับ 'ผมจะจำบทพูดภาษาอังกฤษยังไง
จะทำยังไงดี' ที่หนักที่สุดคือการต่อสู้กับความเหงาครับ" เขาย้อนความทรงจำ

เรน กล่าว "เผลอแป๊ปเดียวก็เทศกาลคริสต์มาสแล้วครับ ตอนนี้พี่ยูแจซอกในรายการ 'Infinity Challenge'
ร้องเพลงวันคริสต์มาสผ่านทางโน๊ตบุ๊คครับ พอผมได้ยินเพลงน้ำตามันก็ไหลออกมาเลย คือจริงๆแล้วผมต้องอยู่ที่นั่น(เกาหลี)ด้วยไงครับ" เขาสารภาพ

เรน เผย "ตอนนั้นผมเศร้าและเหงามากๆจนถึงขั้นคิดสั้นด้วยครับ"
เสริม "มีครั้งหนึ่งผมขึ้นเครื่องบินแล้วมีความคิดว่า 'ถ้าเครื่องบินตกก็คงจะดีสินะ'
ถ้าเป็นเช่นนั้นอย่างน้อยผู้คนก็จะจดจำความพยายามของผมเอาไว้ได้"
เขากล่าวเรื่องช็อค อันเผยให้เห็นถึงภาระอันหนักอึ้ง ที่เรนต้องแบกรับเอาไว้กับคำว่า 'เวิลด์สตาร์' นั่นเอง

แต่ทว่า เรน เผย "แต่การตายทั้งๆที่ยังไม่ได้แต่งงานมันคงจะแย่มากๆ" เขากล่าวติดตลก "ผมว่าผมเป็นคนที่เข้มแข็งนะครับ
แต่ช่วงเวลาแย่ๆแบบนั้นผมก็นึกไม่ถึงเหมือนกันว่าจะคิดเรื่องแรงๆได้ถึงขนาดนั้น ตลอดระยะเวลาในการถ่ายภาพยนตร์กว่า 8 เดือน
ผมคิดแต่ว่า อยากเลิก อยากเลิก คิดไปคิดมาแป๊ปเดียวเราก็ถ่ายภาพยนตร์กันเสร็จพอดีครับ" เขากล่าวถึงวิธีผ่านเรื่องราวเหล่านั้น

โดยเฉพาะเรนเผย "พอถึงวันที่เราปิดกล้องผมปลื้มตัวเองมากๆ ผู้กำกับ(สหรัฐอเมริกา)เอาโซจูของเกาหลีมาให้ผมขวนนึงครับ
ผมดื่มหมดเลย เพราะผู้กำกับไม่รู้ภาษาเกาหลีทำให้ผมบ่นออกไปด้วยครับ" เขากล่าวพร้อมหัวเราะ
เสริม "ผมภูมิใจในตัวเองมากๆ ภูมิใจมากจริงๆ" เขากล่าว

เรน (Rain) ถูกส่งไปโรงพยาบาล!

หลังจากที่เรน (Rain) แสดงบนเวที M! Countdown ของทาง Mnet เสร็จแล้ว
เรนถูกส่งตัวไปที่โรงพยาบาลเนื่องจากไข้หวัดที่ซีเรียสด่วน ในวันที่ 22 เมษายนเรนอยู่ที่ Seoul Samangdong CJ E&M
เพื่อทำการบันทึกเพลงใหม่ของเขา Love Song สำหรับรายการ M! Countdown แต่ว่าหลังจากที่เขาบันทึกเทปเสร็จ เขาเกิดเป็นลมทันทีที่ห้องรอ

ตามข้อมูลจากทีมงาน เรนเป็นไข้หวัดชนิดรุนแรงตั้งแต่วันก่อนที่จะบันทึกเทป
แต่ก็พยายามที่จะบันทึกให้เสร็จก่อน แต่กลับถูกส่งไปโรงพยาบาลทันที

ตัวแทนคนหนึ่งกล่าวว่า หลังจากที่เรนกลับมาครั้งนี้ เขาได้พยายามฝึกทุกๆ วัน ไม่เคยหยุดพร้อมๆ กับการให้สัมภาษณ์
และคอนเสิร์ตต่างๆ ที่ประเทศญี่ปุ่น เนื่องตารางงานของเขาเยอะมาก เรนไม่เคยมีโอกาสได้พักผ่อนเพียงพอเลย

อัลบั้มใหม่ของเขานี้ Back to Basics ที่มีเพลงฮิตคือ Love Song
เรนยังคงได้รับความนิยมเพิ่มมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และยังคงได้รับความรักจากแฟนๆ ของเขาอีกด้วย
