Rain talks about starring in 'Ninja Assassin'.


Hundreds of reporters from all over Asia converged in Seoul to get a chance to speak to rising international star Rain about starring in his new film - the hotly anticipated "Ninja Assassin" - yesterday.

"The (Wachowski) brothers told me to 'forget about Rain the pop-star because from now on, you're a killer and a fighter,'" the popular singer-cum-actor said during a press conference at the Lotte Hotel in downtown central Seoul.

"And for eight months (during the production), I lived day to day thinking I was exactly that ... I think through this film I'll gain a lot of male fans in the future," he joked.

Known as an object of desire for women from all over Asia, the film is ultraviolent, full of killing and mayhem that may not be for the eyes and ears of his female fans.

"This isn't a film that should be seen by young girls, even though some might find ways to see it," he said.

"When I saw the finished film, I was very satisfied that I could not recognize myself on screen - the guy on screen was very different from the real life Jung Ji-hoon."

Seemingly aware of the legions of fans he has amassed throughout his career as a clean-cut pop idol, the 28-year-old Korean heartthrob showed up clad in a smart double-breasted suit sans the long flowing locks, looking less like the cold-blooded killer in the film.

In order to make the transformation into a deadly, Katana-brandishing assassin, Rain underwent a six-month training regimen concocted by the stunt and fight team that whipped the actors in 2007's blockbuster "300" into shape.

"I trained as if my life was hanging by a thread," Rain said.

"Over 90 percent of the stunts in the film I did myself. It was intimidating at first but after I got the hang of it, it all became very easy for me."

As for struggles with having to overcome a language barrier, he said, "The brothers told me not to think too much about speaking the dialogue."

"They requested that I focus entirely on communicating through expressions, mannerisms, and even the movement of my eyes. I also had a speech coach with me at all times so that helped as well."

After appearing in the Wachowski Brother's 2008 box office dud "Speed Racer," Rain had impressed them so much they created the film specifically for the pop-star.

"The Wachowski Brothers are full of imagination and ideas and they are the type of brilliant people who can take what they imagine and transport it onto the movie screen. I have immense respect for them," he said.

"I hope the film does well and I hope a lot of people go watch it because it would be a lie if I said I didn't have expectations for this film. This film has to succeed in order for other Asian actors to get chances in Hollywood in the future and regardless of how well it does, this has been a challenge that's also been an educational experience."

So are there any similarities between Raizo - Rain's title character - and Rain, the pop-star?

"There shouldn't be any similarities," he joked, noting the high body count that piles up in the film.

"I'm not an introvert like Raizo and I'm very social unlike him. I wouldn't be able to live in solitude."

The film hits Korean cinemas nationwide on Nov. 26.

I Approved. A year ago when Rain(27·Jung Ji-Hoon) debuted in Hollywood by playing a supporting role in 'Speed Racer', it looked challengeable.


There were a lot of negative views, "How much would an asian actor especially who was a singer originally succeed in Hollywood?".


In 'Ninja Assassin' coming out on the 26th, the 'Rain' counterattacks to those pessimism. Most of all, one thing is certain that he finished his role with strong sincerity and positive mind in his first Hollywood lead role.


'Ninja Assassin' was directed by the Wachowski brothers('The Matrix') and Joel Silver ('Die Hard' and 'Lethal Weapon'), and produced by James McTeigue (`V for Vendetta').


Rain played 'Laizo' who got trained in Ninja group to be an assassin since his childhood, but turned back from them because of suffering from his merciless murders. I met him in the morning on the 10th.

"If it's not cruel, then it wouldn't be different from other action films. I bet this kind of action film didn't exist after 'Kill Bill' directed by Quentin Tarantino.


To show a totally new character and actions which had never seen before was the Wachowski brothers' ambition. We considered how I could look different from other action stars like Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.

We tried taking advantage of my tall height(6.1 feet), getting more muscles, using new weapons like a chain or lance.


I became the 'murdering machine', 'Laizo' by practicing not only Taekwondo, but boxing, Karade, Kung Fu, Ushu, yamakasi, trampoline, and so on. I also learned Acrobatic.


Now I know where I should hit to make the opponent not breathe and hurt most. After I saw the complete version of this film, the actions were so cool that I couldn't believe the actor was me." (smile)


- Why Ninja? There are some views that the character is a bit plain.


"The Wachowski brothers told me: 'Let's make a character of which feeling is varying whenever we see him', 'I will focus more on close-ups than on full shots.'


They asked me to keep expressing anger and revolt in any hard action scenes. I also had a specialized coach to teach me a facial acting. I agree on that I didn't show my internal-acting much.


However 'Ninja Assassin' is an entertaining film for enjoying the spectacular action. It could be boring if we only enjoy a dance singer's splendid appearance and dance. It is hard to show both."


In the beginning of the movie, there is a scene which shows that he pushed up with handstand on a panel where nails were stuck crowdedly.


For him, it was an 'Infinite Challenge' for 8 months. "At first I couldn't even make it once. I complained wondering why they asked me to. 4 after a month, 10 after two months, and then I did 20 times after three months.


-Didn't you feel lonely on the set? Did you feel any differences between a lead role and a supporting role?


"Everyone was so nice to me that I couldn't feel it. Because I am young, I didn't feel any pressure when I asked something I didn't know. When I heard a new word that I hadn't known before, I wrote it down in my phone and then later I looked into it with a dictionary.


Because Hollywood system is so systematic, actors and actresses are divided by 10 groups depending on their importance. No.1 is a lead role. I was 10 in 'Speed Racer', but 1 in this film.


I got served a meal earliest. 'Do you want pepper or not in a fish dish?' 'Want a basil(a kind of Herb)?', 'Are you hungry much now?' It is even annoying to ask me those many questions.


When shooting, even when I said 'Ah!', an insurance staff, a massager, a physician approached me immediately. How much would they be sensitive because if a lead role actor gets an injury, that means exceeding the budget."(smile)

--You learned a lot from various martial art actors like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan...

=Ninjas always have to hide. They have to be invisible. That's why they keep a hunched posture when dealing with their enemies. So I practiced creeping and using the horse-riding pose. I took lessons from boxing, karate, kung fu and tumbling champions from various countries as well as from the action teams of Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Bruce Lee makes slow moves but they are also very accurate, while Jackie Chan is fast and decisive. We tried to produce perfect action scenes. Even when filming fistfight scenes, I tried to make it look right.

--It's a moden film about ninjas. How did you portray Raizo?

=Larry and Andy (the Wachowski brothers) told me that the mental fight mattered most. I wanted to make my character look fresh every time he appeared on screen.

--How did you make your body so perfect?

=I became healthier by staying away from salt and sugar. I felt like my body was shrinking, like a dried squid. The only liquid that it contained was water. Once a week I ate chicken breasts marinated in wine but I avoided salt and sugar. I lifted light-weight dumbbells to make small muscles.

--You were accompanied by an English tutor all day long...

=He was a Korean living in the U.S. I felt at ease with him. I just spoke in English even when I made mistakes. I was honest with myself, because I was learning. When I didn't know something, I asked. My director also credited me for that. But my English still sounds like nonsense.

--Actor Lee Byung-hun said that he was lonely in Hollywood...

=I bonded with everyone on the film set because I'm very young. Despite my poor English skills I chatted with the director and when I didn't understand something, I took notes and looked it up later at home. Not knowing something is not a crime. Plus, I played a leading role. My needs always came first on the set. I was the first one to receive meals. I wasn't lonely at all, because I was number one (laughs).Later, I was even annoyed because people talked too much to me. I also received pocket money every week, aside from my remuneration. It was big money. I even had to open two bank accounts. It was ten times as much as my remuneration in "Speed Racer," for which I was paid 200,000 won a week.

--Do you have any plans to appear in Korean movies?

=I would want to, but every time it seems to be bad timing. When filming Hollywood movies, it takes more than half a year to prepare and shoot a movie. Once it's over, I have to prepare my new albums and concerts. In no time, three or four years pass. “Ninja” revolves so strictly around the lead actor Rain that even the producers -- the famous Larry Wachowski and Andy Wachowski brothers who directed the “Matrix” trilogy -- said that they “could not have made this movie without Rain”. Even Rain himself, who filmed his first leading role in Hollywood with industry heavyweights such as the Wachowski brothers and Joel Silver, expressed his confidence in “Ninja”, stating that “this is the real deal”. Below is the Q&A session at the press conference for the movie, which opens on November 26.



Q: You showed Before & After pictures of your muscle training in the making-the-film footage released today. We thought you had a great body before you did “Ninja Assassin”, but looking at the pictures, it doesn’t even compare to the body you have now. (laugh) The training process and the filming must have been exhausting.

Rain: First of all, I have lost all the muscle that I had gained while shooting the movie. (laugh) But I really tried very hard during the training. I had always worked hard in the past too, but shooting this film was like life and death for me. Even for the wire actions, I only got enough help to balance my body and I did about 90 percent of the stunts as long as it wasn’t too dangerous. So I tried to make my body very light and, as a result, I got rid of all the fat in my body.



Q: If you did all the intense actions scenes, you must have suffered a lot of injuries.

Rain: I did get hurt a lot but it the effort was worth it and I worked hard. Luckily, nothing got broken but I still have a lot of cuts left on my body. They are like my badges of honor. (laugh)



Q: With such demanding physical workouts, there must have been moments when you felt like you had reached your limit mentally. How did you overcome such moments?

Rain: Honestly, I wanted to go back to Korea every time things got hard. I wanted to go back to Asia, do a lot of concerts and shoot dramas and films in Korea. Every time I asked myself, why in the world am I living like this? But I couldn’t give up because of my pride. The crew had really teased me a lot. (laugh) When I would lift a 100-kilo dumbbell, they would say it’s too light. They would say things like, “I taught Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and you are the worst” and that really got to me. Afterwards, I would watch Hollywood action movies, like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan’s, countless times and study my action moves. Raizo needed to have a uniqueness in his action moves. And every morning, I would read newspapers clips and think to myself that I need to show them what I can do, not just tell them. I actually got more strength from misleading articles about my U.S. debut and negative fan reviews. (laugh) Even if this attempt fails, it was my responsibility to show them the outcome.



Q: Are there any similarities between your character Raizo, the perfect Ninja Assassin, and yourself?

Rain: I’m not as introverted or as cool as Raizo. (laugh) I like to talk and hang out with people, so I don’t think I could live a secluded life like Raizo did. I don’t have much in common with Raizo and I don’t think I should. Well, maybe just the fact that when we set a goal, we both work hard to achieve it. (laugh)




Q: Compared to your Hollywood debut film “Speed Racer”, you have so much more lines in this movie. Were there any difficulties in delivering your lines in English?

Rain: I went from playing a supporting role to a leading role so it’s only natural that I had more lines and I’m grateful for that. I always had a coach beside me to help with the English lines. Actually, what director James McTeigue and the Wachowski Brothers wanted was acting coming from within me more than me just delivering the lines. We used a lot of close-up shots to catch the movements of my eyebrows or facial expression in detail. It was harder to express my inner emotions through subtle facial expressions.




Q: What was it like working with the Wachowski Brothers for the second time after “Speed Racer”?

Rain: The Wachowski Brothers have incredible imagination. And they are the kind of people who can turn their imagination into reality. Of all the things that they said to me, there is nothing that hasn’t come true. They have the ability to bring out their imagination onto film, and I found it amazing that they were kind to everyone. They were producer for this film, unlike in “Speed Racer”, but to me they are the best directors.





Q: “Speed Racer” wasn’t a commercial success. How much commercial success are you expecting for “Ninja Assassin”?

Rain: “Speed Racer” hit No. 2 on the box office in its opening week, but I was disappointed that it didn’t create as huge a sensation as I had expected. But I wasn’t as ambitious back then. I was happy just getting my name on a Hollywood movie as part of the main cast. And with that one movie, people in Hollywood got to know me and I was given more opportunities and that’s how I got to do “Ninja Assassin”. I am hoping that it’s a commercial success, but you don’t always make it on the first try, do you? I think I gained a lot of things from this movie, no matter how it fares commercially. It’s an R-rated movie and a genre film, so I think it could be a massive hit among action manias. If I keep knocking on this door ten or twenty times, there will come a time someday when I’m No. 1 on the box office, right? (laugh)




Q: Like you said, the movie has so many cruel, violent scenes that it got an R-rating. The existing fans of Rain and the movie audience could collide.
Rain: From the beginning, what the Wachowski Brothers requested was, “Forget about the pop star Rain. Forget about the person Jung Ji-hoon. From now on, you are a martial arts fighter and a killer.” I lived like that for eight months. I was confident about myself whomever I met, I even felt like I should enter a martial arts competition after the movie finished. (laugh) First of all, I’m relieved that young female fans can’t watch the film and I think I’ll gain a lot of male fans. Of course, the existing female fans can watch “Ninja Assassin” and unload their stress. Rather than imagining a certain image they have of me, I think they’ll find a different appeal about me after seeing this movie. Even I couldn’t find a single scene, from beginning to end, where I was the singer Rain or the person Jung Ji-hoon. So I was satisfied.




Q: The last scene of the movie hints at a sequel, somewhat. Do you have any plans for doing sequels?
Rain: The last scene is where Raizo is looking down at the world from on top of a wall, and you can see from the look in his eyes that he is silently crying out something on the inside. But I actually don’t know anything for sure. I have signed a couple more contracts but I think it’ll depend on how this movie does. I have a good feeling about it though.




Q: Producer Joel Silver complimented that you are going to be “an actor who is enormously adored” and many of the staff members talked about your passion. What kind of expectation did you have for the film before you started shooting, and what made you work so passionately on it?
Rain: My motivation during the movie was my mother, actually. She used to work from early morning till late at night for years, and I thought it would be disrespectful if I couldn’t bear through this. When I first came to the U.S. and met people, they said that Asians had less than a 10 percent chance to succeed in Hollywood. But when I had the Wachowski Brothers on my side, people started paying attention to me, and with Joel Silver backing me as the producer, other producers started noticing me. There were three flashing turning points in my life and the first was when I met Park Jin-young, the second time when I met the Wachowski Brothers and the third was when I got to do “Ninja Assassin”. Right now, I have the best teams lined up beside me and it’s the become a game that is worth playing. Whether this movie succeeds or not, I think I can really make my name known in Hollywood. Finally, I am in for the real deal.

The Rain is coming down on Ningin

Today has definitely been one of those “I love my job” type days. Since most of you guys never had the experience of doing a press junket and interviewing celebs, I thought it would be good to go through my entire three hour experience with Rain and the marketing team at Warner Bros. And what a great team they have at Warner Bros. Everyone was so nice, open and chatty. I wish every studio was like that.

We’re going to divide this interview into three parts:

Part 1: Behind the scene and other side stories
Part 2: Interview with Rain
Part 3: Interview with Ninja Assassin director, James McTeigue

Let’s start this journey from where I was walking to Rain’s hotel from the Mixr office around 1pm EST. Almost immediately it started to rain and my first thought was, “how appropriate to interview Rain today.” The commute included passing through Time Square, aka tourist capital of New York City. There was a big crowd of Asian people massing and I was thinking that can’t be because of Rain, he’s suppose to be doing interviews now.

As I said in my review, Asian movies or movies starring Asian people don’t really get this kind of big budget treatment. I can’t say this enough, Ninja Assassin is just huge for Asians in mainstream media on many different levels.

After helping myself to the food — mostly the desserts – I sat down at the first open seat. To my great fortune, I was sharing a table with Rain’s personal stylist who I’ll call Jane. Now, Jane is a cool person. In addition to Rain, she’s been the stylist of just about every major celeb. One notable story Jane told me was about her trip to South Korea with Ben Stiller for some movie promo. She said Ben is even funnier in person and that they would spend their free time playing Guitar Hero. Can you imagine how cool is it to play Guitar Hero with Ben Stiller?

Naturally I asked Jane a lot of questions about Rain’s daily routine, hairstyle, etc. Turns out, Rain does most of his hair styling by himself. By the way, Rain cut his hair very short compared to the long locks he had as Raizo in the movie. It’s dyed a warm brown as you can see in my candid photo of him. Jane says that for the most part Rain dresses and styles himself. She just does touch ups and minor tweaks here and there when needed.

Jane was also kind enough to show me Rain’s schedule for today. The poor guy had an early morning TV spot on the Today Show, about six hours of one-on-one interviews with :-)-hour lunch break, three hours of TV interviews, dinner, and some local event where he’ll be making an appearance. All in all it was like a 14+ hour schedule. I was looking at the impressive list of magazines and websites that were interviewing Rain. Unfortunately, I don’t have photo recall memory so I can’t really remember the names of all those magazines/websites. One somewhat surprising thing was that Ningin was the only Asian media outlet on that interview list. But hey, I have no problems with that.

About 2:30pm I finally got to go up to Rain’s palace of a hotel room. Rain, however, was not there. His rep told me that he was busy being mobbed in Time Square by adoring fans. I said to the rep escorting me, “You have bodyguards going with him right.” The rep, we’ll call him Bob, said, “no,” and that he really had no idea how popular Rain was globally. I told him Rain is easily the Justin Timberlake of Asia, on his way to the Michael Jackson stratosphere. Bob then said yea, he’s been hearing that a lot lately.

While waiting for Rain, Bob would tell me about how much Rain’s English has approved from Speed Racer to Ninja Assassin. He says the difference is “10 times” better in :-) year span. Not only that, but Rain works hard before every interview to make sure he’s composed, relaxed, and natural in his speech. He would talk to Bob after each interview to see what he did good and bad and how he could improve the next time. This is not surprising for the fans that know Rain as the hard-working, perfectionist.

Another Warner Bros rep, we’ll call her Susy, updated us that Rain is on his way back and needs to finish his hot dog. That just made me laugh out loud to think that of all the good (but pricey) restaurants in Time Square, Rain settled for a hot dog street vendor. I guess it was Rain after all, stopping traffic on my walk there. It’s funny that I passed him without knowing it.

Susy also told me an interesting story in the Washington D.C. airport involving Rain and some overly rambunctious Clouds (fans of Rain). To protect Rain’s travel plans, Susy would book multiple flights during each leg of the Ninja Assassin press junket. That way, people wouldn’t know which flight Rain was leaving on or which gate. Apparently that wasn’t enough as according to Susy, “little Asian girls were chasing Rain wherever he went in the airport!”

Jeong Ji-hoon, better known as Rain, has reunited with producers Joel Silver, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski for the Hollywood martial arts movie "Ninja Assassin."

How did he endure the rigorous training? "There were many times when I wanted to quit during the eight months of shooting because it was so painful, but there were three reasons why I couldn't," he told reporters Tuesday. "First of all, I promised to my fans four years ago that I will do a film that can compete in the global market. Secondly, it had to do with my self-esteem. Trainers were teasing me, saying they had trained Brad Pitt and Matt Damon and I was the worst one. I wondered how well they did, and did my best, watching Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan's movies. Lastly, I read distorted articles about me every morning, and wanted to prove them wrong."

Rain said he did over 90 percent of stunts in the film himself. "I thought I could die. I worked that hard," he said. "I had to lose all of body fat in order to make my body light. I didn't break anything during the shooting, but I had a lot of cuts here and there."

His first Hollywood movie "Speed Racer," where he played a supporting role, was a flop, but Rain thinks it was nevertheless a worthwhile experience. "The movie helped me make my name known in Hollywood and, I think, I was also able to land the lead in 'Ninja Assassin' thanks to it," he said. "I anticipate a box office success with this movie, and if it succeeds, I believe that it will open doors for other Korean and Asian actors."

Asked about the graphic violence throughout the film, Rain said, "Of course it's not a movie for the whole family, but action fans will really love this."

The Wachowskis told him to forget about the pop star status and the man Jeong Ji-hoon. "You are a killer," they said. He said he actually lived like a killer for those eight months. "Now the shoot has ended, I still feel like I have to fight, and when the film gets released, I think I'll have a lot of new male fans. I also think a lot of women fans will be able to relieve stress watching the film."

Ningin has interviewed BoA, the Wonder Girls, Utada, and many other wonderful Asian celebs. This interview with Rain felt bigger than all of those. For me, part of it is because of what we’re interviewing him for, the Ninja Assassin movie – the first big budget Hollywood film with an Asian male lead and a mostly Asian cast. Plus, it’s Rain. There’s no bigger male Asian pop star in the world! I was actually a little nervous but, more excited than anything else.

I don’t know if the Warner reps picked up on my nervousness or not, but they told me not to worry and that Rain is a great and easy guy to talk to, much easier than a lot of other non-Asian celebs they worked with. I said yea, in general, all the Asian celebs I interviewed before are like that. It’s part of the pop-factory education process over there.

The room was a lot larger than the photo shows and that red couch was where Rain and I sat for the interview. My actual time with Rain was about 25-30 mins. 10-15 of those minutes was spent listening to Rain and his friends play around with some 3-D camera from Fuji. He was taking pictures of Time Square with it. One of those pictures is a big Ninja Assassin billboard in the middle of Time Square. I can only imagine how cool it is to see a billboard of your movie, with you in it, at the epic center of New York City.

Hoc: Thank you Rain for taking the time to talk to Ningin.com. We have many fans of yours on our site!

Rain: No problem, anytime.

Hoc: Was shooting Ninja Assassin the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

Rain: I trained for 8 months, 6 hours a day. 5 hours were spent on martial arts training and one hour on total body fitness. (looking somewhat sad) The hardest part was the diet where I could only eat chicken and vegetables.

(The press package had a note from the Director saying Rain joked around about eating noodles, drinking beers, and smoking cigars when the shooting was over.)

Hoc: How did you prepare for your role as Raizo? Did you dress up like a ninja for two months and sneak up on people? What was your inspiration?

I think Raizo is a very strong character. He was very fun to play. I watched a lot of ninja movies and cartoons.

Hoc: Like which ones?

Rain: Ninja. That’s the title of the movie and many other samurai shows.

Hoc: Describe how you felt when the Wachowski brothers asked you to play a ninja?

Rain: I love working with the Wachowski brothers; they take good care of me. When they asked me if I wanted to play a ninja, I said, “how could I say no to that.” We have a very good relationship.

Hoc: Do you plan on working with them in the future?

Rain: Yes, I hope so but nothing definite right now.

Hoc: Those weapons in the movie look razor sharp considering they could slice people in half and all. Did you cut yourself or get hurt during the movie?

Rain: Yea I did get hurt a few times.

Hoc: Wait like, broken bones, deep gashes, stuff like that?

Rain: Yes I did get cut a lot; all over my body and even on my nose and my face. But they took good care of me, and I’m fined.

(starring at his face, I don’t see visible scars.)

Hoc: Are you concerned about getting typecast? Or do you only want to do action films. You’ve done two films in the US, Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin. Both are action-oriented movies.

Rain: Speed Racer was fun but very different from Ninja Assassin. The work is much more intense. I did much more training for Ninja Assassin. But I want to do all types of movies — horrors, romance, comedy.


Hoc: Speaking of comedy, and I know Ninja Assassin isn’t technically a comedy, but you had some really funny one-liners in Ninja Assassin, (doing my best Raizo voice) “I don’t mean to be critical, but you need to finish now.” (This was during a scene where Rain was tied up and Mika was trying as fast as she could to unlock all the restraints on Raizo while a ninja was moments away from slashing Raizo and Mika in half.) I’m wondering if there’s a chance we’ll see you working with Ben Stiller or in some comedy movie soon?

Rain: (Rain didn’t know who Ben Stiller was, his translator had to tell him he was a famous comedian. Sorry Ben if you ever read this!) I would love to do comedies with Ben Stiller or anyone. I have no projects lined up but I’m currently looking at three scripts. I want to do all type of movies. You might see a comedy film very soon! That’s all I can say right now.

Hoc: Well, I’m sure you just made a lot of people happy right about now.

Ningin เคยสัมภาษณ์โบอา, วันเดอร์เกิร์ล, อูทาดะ ฮิคารุ และคนดังเอเชียอีกหลายต่อหลายคน แต่การสัมภาษณ์เรนครั้งนี้รู้สึกว่ายิ่งใหญ่กว่าทุกครั้งที่ผ่านมา สำหรับฉันแล้วเป็นเพราะว่าสิ่งที่เรากำลังจะสัมภาษณ์เรนนั่นเอง หนังเรื่อง Ninja Assassin เป็นหนังทุ่มทุนสร้างของฮอลลีวูดกับนักแสดงนำชายชาวเอเชียและนักแสดงเอเชียส่วนใหญ่ในหนัง ยิ่งไปกว่านั้นเพราะเป็นเรน! ไม่มีศิลปินชายชาวเอเชียคนไหนในโลกที่ยิ่งใหญ่ไปกว่านี้อีกแล้ว! จริง ๆ แล้วฉันก็ประหม่านิดหน่อยเหมือนกันนะ แต่ก็ตื่นเต้นมากกว่าอยู่ดี

ฉันไม่รู้ว่าตัวแทนของวอร์เนอร์ฯ จับอาการประหม่าของฉันได้รึเปล่า แต่เค้าบอกกับฉันว่าไม่ต้องกังวลแถมบอกว่าเรนน่ะเป็นคนที่ยอดเยี่ยมและคุยด้วยได้ง่ายมาก สบายกว่าคุยกับพวกคนดังที่ไม่ใช่คนเอเชียที่พวกเค้าเคยทำงานด้วยตั้งเยอะ ฉันเลยบอกว่า ใช่ค่ะ ปกติแล้วคนดังเอเชียทุกคนที่ฉันเคยสัมภาษณ์มาก่อนก็เป็นแบบนั้นแหละ

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังนั่งอยู่ในห้องของเรนที่โรงแรม ห้องน่ะกว้างกว่าที่เห็นในรูปมาก และโซฟาสีแดงตัวนั้นก็เป็นที่ที่เรนและฉันใช้นั่งสัมภาษณ์กัน เวลาที่ฉันได้คุยกับเรนจริง ๆ ก็ประมาณ 25-30 นาที ซัก 10-15 นาทีในนั้นเป็นการฟังเรนพูดและเพื่อน ๆ ของเค้าก็เล่นกล้องสามมิติจากฟูจิอยู่รอบ ๆ เรนใช้กล้องตัวนี้ถ่ายรูปไทม์สแควร์ หนึ่งในรูปพวกนั้นก็คือรูปบิลบอร์ดยักษ์ใจกลางไทม์สแควร์ ฉันนึกภาพออกเลยว่ามันเจ๋งขนาดไหนที่ได้เห็นบิลบอร์ดของหนังตัวเอง..ที่มีคุณอยู่ในนั้น ณ ใจกลางนิวยอร์คซิตี้น่ะ

Hoc: การถ่ายทำ NA เป็นสิ่งที่ยากที่สุดที่คุณเคยทำมาใช่มั๊ยคะ?

Rain:ผมฝึกเป็นเวลา 8 เดือน 6 ชั่วโมงต่อวัน 5 ชั่วโมงกับการฝึกศิลปะการต่อสู้และอีก 1 ชั่วโมงสำหรับบอดี้ฟิตเนสครับ ส่วนที่ยากที่สุดคือการไดเอ็ทที่ผมสามารถทานได้แค่ไก่และผักเท่านั้น

(เคยได้รับโน้ตจากผู้กำกับเล่าว่า เรนอำไปทั่วเกี่ยวกับการทานบะหมี่, ดื่มเบียร์ และสูบซิการ์ตอนการถ่ายทำจบลง)

Hoc: คุณเตรียมตัวสำหรับการรับบทบาทเป็นไรโซ่ยังไงบ้าง?

Rain : ผมคิดว่าไรโซ่เป็นตัวละครที่มีความชัดเจนมากครับ เป็นบทที่สนุกสำหรับการแสดงมาก ผมดูหนังนินจากับการ์ตูนเยอะแยะเลยครับ

Hoc: เช่นเรื่องอะไรบ้างคะ?

Rain:นินจาครับ นั่นเป็นชื่อหนัง และก็ยังมีการแสดงซามูไรอื่น ๆ อีกเยอะแยะครับ

Hoc: อธิบายให้ฟังหน่อยได้มั๊ยคะว่าคุณรู้สึกยังไงเมื่อพี่น้องวาชอสกี้ขอให้คุณมาเล่นเป็นนินจา?

Rain: ผมรักการทำงานกับพี่น้องวาชอสกี้ครับ พวกเค้าดูแลผมเป็นอย่างดี ตอนที่เค้าถามผมว่าอยากจะเล่นเป็นนินจามั๊ย ผมก็บอกว่า “ผมจะพูดว่าไม่ได้ยังไงกันล่ะครับ” เรามีมิตรภาพที่ดีต่อกันมากเลยครับ

Hoc: คุณวางแผนที่จะทำงานร่วมกับพวกเค้าอีกในอนาคตมั๊ยคะ?

Rain: ครับ ผมหวังว่าจะเป็นอย่างนั้นแต่ตอนนี้ยังไม่มีอะไรแน่นอนครับ

Hoc: อาวุธพวกนั้นในหนังดูคมจนสามารถจะหั่นคนได้เป็นท่อน ๆ คุณเคยโดนบาดหรือได้รับบาดเจ็บระหว่างการถ่ายบ้างมั๊ยคะ?

Rain: เคยครับ ผมเคยได้รับบาดเจ็บสองสามครั้ง

Hoc: เดี๋ยวนะคะ แบบกระดูกหัก, มีดฟันเป็นแผลลึก อะไรอย่างนี้เหรอคะ?

Rain: ครับ ผมโดนฟันบ่อยมาก ทั่วทั้งตัวผมไม่เว้นแม้แต่จมูกหรือหน้าผมเลยครับ แต่พวกเค้าก็ดูแลผมเป็นอย่างดี และผมก็สบายดีครับ

(จ้องหน้าเค้าแล้ว ฉันไม่เห็นรอยแผลเป็นค่ะ)

Hoc: คุณเคยนึกถึงการแสดงแบบที่คนอยากดูบ้างมั๊ยคะ? หรือคุณอยากจะเล่นแต่หนังแอ็คชั่นเท่านั้น คุณมีหนังในอเมริกา 2 เรื่องแล้ว Speed Racer และ Ninja Assassin ซึ่งต่างก็เป็นหนักแอ็คชั่นตะวันออกทั้งคู่

Rain: SR สนุกแต่ก็แตกต่างอย่างมากกับ NA นะครับ การทำงานเรื่อง NA เข้มข้นกว่ามาก ผมได้เทรนเยอะกว่ามาก ๆ ในเรื่องนี้ แต่ผมก็อยากจะเล่นหนังทุกแนวแหละครับ ทั้งสยองขวัญ โรแมนติก หรือหนังตลก

Hoc: พูดถึงหนังตลก และฉันรู้ว่า NA ไม่ใช่หนังตลกโดยทางเทคนิค แต่ก็มีตอนตลก ๆ ในหนังเรื่องนี้เหมือนกัน (tempura : ตรงนี้ขอข้ามค่ะ แอบสปอยล์) ฉันสังสัยว่าจะมีโอกาสที่เราจะได้เห็นคุณร่วมงานกับเบน สติลเลอร์หรือเล่นหนังตลกเร็ว ๆ นี้มั๊ยคะ?

Rain: (เรนไม่รู้จักเบน สติลเลอร์ ล่ามของเรนต้องบอกว่าเบนคือนักแสดงตลกชื่อดัง เสียใจกับเบนด้วยนะถ้าคุณได้อ่านตรงนี้!) ผมรักที่จะแสดงหนังตลกกับเบนหรือใครก็ได้ครับ ผมยังไม่มีโปรเจ็คอะไรตอนนี้ แต่ผมกำลังดู ๆ บทอยู่ 3 เรื่องครับ ผมอยากจะเล่นหนังทุกแนว คุณอาจจะได้เห็นหนังตลกเร็ว ๆ นี้ก็ได้! ตอนนี้ผมบอกได้แค่นี้แหละครับ

Hoc: ค่ะ ฉันมั่นใจว่าคุณเพิ่งจะทำให้ผู้คนมีความสุขมากมายตอนนี้เลยล่ะค่ะ

Rain: I would love to sleep. A good day for me is if I can sleep in.

Hoc: Ok, besides sleep, what do you do for fun?

Rain: I like to play sports. I love basketball and baseball and anything where I move around a lot.

Hoc: Oh you like baseball (I’m a huge Yankees fan). What’s your favorite team?

Rain: Lakers. Oh baseball team, I like the Yankees.

Hoc: You’re not just saying that because you’re in New York are you?

Rain: No, I like them a lot.

Hoc: Then you must be happy they won the World Series?

Rain: (smiles) Yes I am.

Hoc: By the way, do you play video games?

Rain: No, I hate games, and never play them.

Hoc: Ok thanks for a great interview, I had a lot of fun!

Rain: No problem, thank you. Bye.

I came in with a bunch more questions for Rain, but unfortunately didn’t get around to asking them. Perhaps next time. He was so easy to talk to, I felt like I could talk for hours. Then again, I’m sure a lot of people (especially girls) would say that in Rain’s presence. Everyone talks about how nice and easy going Rain is. I got to experience that firsthand. And I have to say, it felt pretty good.
