The Swallowed Sun: Cast & Crew Arrives in South Africa



Slated for a Wednesday and Thursday time slot and starring Ji Sung and Sung Yuri, SBS drama, " The Swallowed Sun," begins filming in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On the 26th, the film crew departed from Incheon International airport and arrived at Sun City Resorts, South Africa on the 27th. During dinner, the actors and the production crew exchanged brief introductions and received their work schedules for the duration of their time in South Africa. Upon arrival at the slum outside Johannesburg on the 27th, the production team forbade any individual activity among the cast and crew members in an effort to prevent extreme accidents and to allot sufficient time for the arrangement of armed police and etc. The filming begins in an anxious state.

In the nearby village, the auditions and the activities of the extras has begun. During the day's filming, actor Hong Seok-Cheon (홍석천) surprised many of the villagers with his fluent English. Hong Seok-Cheon explains that his English proficiency is a result of the time he spends managing his own western food restaurant that is located in Itaewon.

"The Swallowed Sun" is a collaboration between the producer of the SBS drama, "All In," Yoo Chul Yong and writer, Choi Wan Kyu. The drama's plot revolves around Ji Sung's character, who is an illegitimate child that transitions through a rebellious childhood and struggles through hardships to eventually find love and gain a successful career. Other cast members include: Lee Wan, Yoo Oh Sung, Son Hyun Joo, and etc.

The Swallowed Sun: The First Days of Filming



Scheduled to air this summer, SBS drama, 'The Swallowed Sun,' has begun filming in South Africa.

On the 26th, the drama's set was flown from Incheon International Airport to Johannesburg, South Africa. The set arrived 26 hours later and was brought directly to the filming site, Sun City Resort.

Although Ji Sung, Yoo Oh Sung, and other cast members were exhausted after their long flight and their daily commutes to the filming locations, they were all looking forward to their first overseas filming.

Questions arose as to why this drama would choose to use such costly expenses to film overseas, especially during the bad economic crisis that currently plagues South Korea. Director Yoo Chul Yong answers "Although the economy is bad, these overseas scenes are crucial to the drama's plot and therefore, cannot be left out of the drama. This is the reason why we chose to film in South Africa, despite all of the difficulties."

"It is common to face many hardships during an overseas shoot, but cast and crew members must come together as a family and help each other overcome the challenges."

Notices that forbade individual activity, including any extreme activities or action, and references regarding the armed police were given to cast and crew members before their arrival in South Africa.

Under an air of unavoidable anxiety, initial filming began at a slum outside of Johannesburg on the 28th. With the help of translators, auditions for extras were currently taking place. The production team also tried to understand more about the local situation by conversing with these happy and simple natives.

The crews revealed, "Not far away from Johannesburg, we saw these small shelters made of untidy stones and torn cloths. They are built along the bottom of the hills and there are more than a thousand of them. You really can't believe that there are people living in places like this." The scene being filmed at the moment entails a cast member unconditionally giving out food to the poor villagers. Five other individuals will come looking for him, asking him to join them.

Because this village has never been the location of a drama or movie set before, the villagers anxiously awaited for the appearances of the cast and crew members and they celebrated the arrival of the film set as if it were a special occasion. The competition to become a translator for this drama was fierce as the pay of $1200 a day was equivalent to several days of hard work for these natives.

The filming began early at 5 am around the slums area and then moved to the Nelson Mandela Bridge in the afternoon. The last filming location of the day was at Broederstroom, Lesedi Cultural Village, which ended around 1 am. The first day of filming totaled 21 hours.

Sung Yuri & Ji Sung: A Delayed Kiss Scene



Sung Yuri and Ji Sung's kiss scene was delayed due to the presence of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa.

The film set disclosed "We were originally scheduled to film a kiss scene for the drama, 'The Swallowed Sun', in the hotel on the 29th of March. But due to Nelson Mandela's concurrent lodging in the same hotel, the hotel management did not allow any filming to proceed."

Because South Africa serves as the host for the 2010 World Cup, the former President's lodging in the hotel is due to his scheduled attendance at an International Conference that will be held at this hotel in the near future.

"Due to security purposes, the hotel management forbade any filming inside the hotel. The production crew had no choice but to change their plans and instead, film the outdoor scenes outside Johannesburg. At this time, we are unsure of the former president's length of stay at this hotel."
