Picture-perfect beauty Kim Tae-hee now leaps into the big screen with her first leading role in "The Restless." The Journal talked with Kim at the premiere of her new film at Yongsan CGV in Seoul on Dec. 15. By Annie S. Sung
The Journal: Many people are wondering why you chose an action fantasy genre, which is regarded as a risky option in the Korean film market.
Kim: I've been receiving hundreds of scenarios but nothing really appealed to me. I wanted to feel some connection with my character and "So-hwa" in this film gave me that feeling. Whether or not the movie hits it big, I'm happy with my decision.
How was it working with a multiracial staff in China for six months?
Kim: It was so much fun to work with people who speak different languages. The funny thing is we used a lot of body language and never had any problem understanding one another. We had translators for Chinese, Japanese and American staff, though.
Any hard times with food or harsh action scenes?
Kim: Food was great. We had some Korean staff who were cooking for us. Every day, this big van carrying all the food arrived at the location with lovely smell, and it was my favorite part of the day. (Laughs) Doing all the action scenes, I got bruised all over my body but I can't complain because I learned a lot from this film.
You've just watched your film. Which scenes do you like the best?
Kim: I like the scene where Jung Woo-sung and I run across each other for the first time. The music, scattering petals, Emi Wada's antique costumes and everything are so beautiful.
Does beauty run in your family? You and your actor brother Lee Wan are both so good-looking!
Kim: My mom has beautiful eyes. And my brother and sister have my mom's eyes. My sister was a flight attendant, and I think she's much prettier than I.
You're every guy's dream girl. Then, what type of guy do you usually fall for?
Kim: I don't care what he looks like but we have to have chemistry. I think communication is the most important thing in a relationship.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years, when you turn 36?
Kim: I want to be a devoted mother and a wife. And if I can keep doing my work, it would be great.
