| One Fine Day with Sung Yuri March 31st, 2008 // by javabeans Over the weekend, Sung Yuri held her first solo fanmeeting in her ten-year-long career (having pursued her acting after gaining her start as part of pop girl band Fin.K.L.). (An aside: Sung Yuri’s had a tough time gaining recognition as an actress, but I’ve been seeing articles floating around in recent days acknowledging that Hong Gil Dong just might be the breakthrough she needs to be called an actor. Her early role in Thousand Years of Love was panned; she didn’t fare much better in Prince’s First Love or Snow Queen. She’s admitted that her approach to acting has also changed over the years, and while I don’t think you could call her skilled just yet — her Hong Gil Dong role has been critiqued as overacting — it’s a sign that she’s improving.) On the 30th, approximately 500 fans attended the two-hour-long event at Joong-ang University Art Hall in Seoul. Notably, the event was attended by her former Fin.K.L-mates Lee Hyori, Ok Ju Hyun and Lee Jin. She sang a song — “Fly Me to the Moon” — in her first time performing onstage in four years. And, although her birthday was March 3, a birthday cake was brought out at the fanmeeting to celebrate her 27th (28 in Korean years; she’s a 1981-er) as well. Also in attendance were many of her Hong Gil Dong co-stars: Kang Ji Hwan, Jung Kyu Su (Grandpa Heo), Park Sang Wook (Su Geun), Cha Hyun Jung (Mal Nyeo), Maeng Seh Chang (Gom), Kim Rina (Eun Hye), and Kim Jae Seung (In Hyung). The cast members shared some more behind-the-scenes stories from the drama series, emceed by comedian and fellow costar Moon Seh Yoon (Yeon). (Wither Jang Geun Seok? I don’t believe he was at Kang Ji Hwan’s fanmeeting either. Maybe he doesn’t like birthday parties. Still, it’s nice to see the show of support between the castmates carry over from Kang Ji Hwan’s recent fete.) Sung Yuri thanked her fans, saying: “I call my fans my friends. They’re people I can talk to and open my heart to. I’m not usually the type of person who expresses her inner thoughts easily, but when there’s something troubling me, I go into my fan cafe and unload what’s bothering me. My friends write words of comfort and are a huge support to me. In the ten years since I’ve debuted, they’re my dearest friends.” |
