Arirang Surveys Popularity of Korean Celebrities

Thanks for staying with us. We at Arirang just recently conducted a global survey on the popularity of Korean celebrities.

The survey in mid-December asked 775 people from 46 countries with whom they"d like to watch the first sunrise of the new year.

Topping the female chart were actresses Song Hyegyo and Kim Taehee, who tied at just over 20 percent. Other leading ladies included Lee Youngae and Ha Jiwon .

In the male category, number ONE was the heartthrob singer-actor Rain grabbing 24 percent or 189 votes. Trailing behind him were names like Jang Donggun, Lee Junki and Bae Yongjun .

"The Restless" releases for 2 weeks attracted more female spectators and obtained first place in advance booking sales



The movie "The Restless" by Jung Woo Sung, Kim Tae Hee, obtained 1st place in advance booking sales.

During the first week of release, "The Restless" has attracted more than 1,000,000 spectators. According to Max Movie, as at 27th morning, it has gotten the 1st place in advance booking sales, which is 24.42% of the domestic movie sales.

INTERVIEW WITH JUNG WOO-SUNG

How did you get the chance to star in "The Restless"?
I liked the people I was going to work with. Not only there"s great people you can easily work with like President Jo Min-Hwan and Director Kim Sung-Soo, but there was this guy working as assistant under Kim Sung-Soo, famous for his "touchy" personality in Chungmuro, for eight long years without saying a bad thing, and that was Jo Dong-Oh. How could I possibly refuse working with someone like that (laughs)? I accepted without even looking at the script, but it"s nothing really new for me: I decided to star in ลยพ็ภบ พ๘ดู (Our Sunny Days) hearing its basic outline while working on บ๑ฦฎ (Beat); I heard the story of this slave warrior in the Goryeo Dynasty and decided to star in นซป็ (Musa: The Warrior) while working on Our Sunny Days. The only films I agreed to star in after reading the script were ณป ธำธฎผำภว ม๖ฟ์ฐณ (A Moment To Remember), ตฅภฬม๖ (Daisy) and ป๕ตๅนซบ๑ (Sad Movie).

You"re shooting another Wuxia in China. Compared to "Musa", how was the shoot this time. Was it difficult?
Just like back then... I can"t really say whether it was difficult or not. I mean, obviously it feels like it might be hard for you physically, but the key is how you approach it mentally. Back when we shot Musa, it was their (Chinese"s) land, but we essentially invited them in our film. Since we had a good final result with that film, we were able to make The Restless. I guess the hardest thing was the fact we mostly shot at night, so changing my sleeping habits wasn"t easy. We"d usually prepare the day"s shoot around 4 in the afternoon, start shooting at 5 or 6 and continue all night long, then rest during the day. So there were a few difficult spots indeed.

In "Musa" you introduced realistic action like getting penetrated by a sword. Is the Wuxia action in "The Restless" any different?
There"s a lot more wire action in this, especially for the other actors. Since it"s a fantasy, even swords are used in an illusory, daydream like fashion. But since in the film I"m a living being and not a transcendental spirit like the others, I use swords with intensity and raw power, and I don"t fly around, with a few exceptions. My wire action scenes happen when pent-up anger explodes every now and then, think like when I"m hit by my antagonist" spear and fall down.

Although there have been a few Wuxia films in the past, none had really any impact at the box office. It must be a big burden for you.
The biggest problem until now in our industry is the limitations the genre faced in terms of development. They focused too much on the technical and visual aspects of the film. In The Restless we certainly focused on those elements, but the characters and the story come alive as well. Every character in the film lives guided by the memories of their past, so in a way this might still be a love story, but memories play a big factor. I think this is something which can involve the viewers, and make them think.

What kind of meaning does the character you play in the film have for Jung Woo-Sung as an actor?
In this profession you always feel a certain pressure to make the character come alive. All the things I experienced and learned as an actor feel like combining to form a more mature and complete character in this film, in my opinion.

How do you compare working with Jeon Ji-Hyun in "Daisy" and Kim Tae-Hee here?
Jeon Ji-Hyun conveyed the character"s sentiments right as she felt them while reading the script, trying to re-experience those sentiments. In comparison, Kim Tae-Hee tends to analyze her character a lot more, approaching it rationally. So she nagged a lot more, it felt like she wasn"t too confident about this situation of playing a spirit at first. I just told her acting starts from feelings, from understanding what you feel and trusting that feeling.

Your career now spans a decade. Any worries or changes since then?
My attitude towards the industry and the way I work hasn"t changed that much. If anything, I learned a lot, not only in terms of experience, but also how to enjoy what I do. That"s what those 10 years did to me, they gave me a space to learn and learn to have fun doing this. Films are still a lot of fun to me, just the feeling of my work turning into a scene inside a film makes me excited. And another thing, working in the industry for so long gave me a new dream, that of "director." That Hollywood company"s name, Dreamworks... I think they really chose it well. It feels like a dream.

Then she adds her own..

After that she folded her body... and expected to look beautiful like a butterfly.

one way the word can be used is "sajin eul jjig neun dah" meaning "taking a picture" (which she does with daniel)

the other meaning is "sarang hah neun saram eul jjig neun dah" meaning "you claim the person you love" where she pokes daniel and he"s like "OUCH!!"

and then...the camera phone does like a 180 degree turn and daniel goes "ooh dol ah"

"dol ah" has two meanings. the first one meaning that something turns or spins (like the camera phone)

and the other meaning of "dol ah" is to go crazy. and at the end kim tae hee says "yeah...when you"re in love, you go crazy"

so the whole CF is just a play on words and using "dol ah" because the camera phone can be turned around. i hope that helped"

KTH: Hello I am Kim Tae Hee who plays as So-hwa in ?The Restless".

JWS: Hello, I am Jung Woo Sung, nice to meet you.


Sina: ?The Restless? is to be released soon, can both introduce this movie and your respective role?

KTH: ?The Restless? is a space where the dead souls remain for 49 days before reincarnation. My role is a celestial guardian, So-Hwa, who consoles souls and leads them through the path to reincarnation.

JWS: I play as a demon warrior, Yi Kwak. He breaks into the Mid Heaven, seeking for his dead lover, So-Hwa.

Sina: What makes you accept this movie? Moreover, this is Kim Tae Hee?s debut movie.

KTH: As for me, So-Hwa has to lead the souls through the path of reincarnation, therefore, she holds a higher rank than the souls, with extraordinary power and able to control the souls. But she has lost all her recollections of the mortal world, who is as pure as a kid. I am attracted to this character and I feel that it will be a challenge to my acting skills, so I chose this movie.

JWS: I have a close friendship with the producers of this movie, so this should be the reason why I chose this movie. As you know, the representative from this movie company, Director Kim Sung Su, is the director of Musa: The Warrior, who I have worked with for a couple of times in Korea. ?The Restless? Director Cho Dong Oh, has been working together with Director Kim Sung Su for 7-8 years. When I meet him, he is so well-prepared and makes me feel that this is going to be a great movie. This is the first Korea movie that combines martial arts with special effects, you have to use your imaginative to fight in the space. This got me interested to give this movie a try.

Sina: Are there any difficulties you encountered while filming? Can you share some fun experience with us?

KTH: Filming has to stop when the rain pours, and sometimes it will snow. The crew and director suffer a lot due to the weather. Apart from that, the Chinese and Japanese crew support and work well with Korean crew and director, therefore there does not seem to be any big problems.

JWS: I had previously worked in China for quite a while during the filming of ?Musa: The Warrior?, so this time . And it is a pleasure working with crew from other countries. I used to fight with real opponents, but this time there is none, as we need to include computer effects. While filming, there are a lot of fun happenings but nothing real special.

Sina: You had spent a long time filming ?The Restless? in China, what is your impression of China?

KTH: First of all, China is really a vast country. We communicated to China crew during filming intervals, driving long distance to filming location, waiting for filming to start, and on our way back. They took good care of us, I feel that China crew are very sincere, so this left me a very good impression.

JWS: Each province of China has its own peculiar food, and they are very delicious.

Sina: It is said that Kim Tae Hee adapted well to life in China, what had left you the deepest impression during your stay in China?

KTH: Those involved in the filming are nice people and they took good care of me. So I adapted easily to the new environment.

Sina: Jung Woo Sung, how many times have you visited China?

JWS: I have been here for several times. The total time spent in China, due to the filming of ?Musa: The Warrior? and ?The Restless?, should have exceeded a year.

Sina: You had spent such a long time in China, any food you like in particular?
